Class began with a presentation on Tim Rollins and K.O.S. (Kids of Survival). LINK
We specifically looked at their practice of "jammin'", where students would paint directly onto the pages of the books they were reading relating the text to their own experience.
To make the practice our own, participants were given pages from the State of Texas' opening remarks in the capital punishment trial of Charlie Brooks.
Three readings were done out loud with different participant reading.
Afterwards we had a group discussion about the content of the reading. Also, we discussed the difficult content discussed and the potential for secondary trauma. Students were encouraged to talk with us if they were having a hard time.
